Her big brother and my favorite little man, Jaxon, also joined us for a few shots. Elsa, cheese, Elsa, cheese, Elsa, cheese.

I just received a delivery of apples from the Okanagan (the largest and most beautiful ambrosias you’ve ever seen), and was reminded that I never posted these images from my last Okanagan photo shoot.

I spent two rainy, cool days in Kelowna apple orchards while WorkSafeBC filmed a video on tractor safety. Although it certainly wasn’t vacation weather, we couldn’t have paid for a better soft box- those overcast skies were consistent for the entire two days. Thanks to this crew from Vancouver for including me in the shoot. It was great to watch your creative minds at work.

WorksafeBC has an impressive collection of videos focusing on safety in the workplace, from agriculture to healthcare. Some of those videos were highlighted in an article I wrote for the latest issue of WorkSafe Magazine.

Jaxon was already rubbing his eyes when he arrived at Auntie Carey’s house tonight. He was clearly done trick or treating, and not in the mood for a photo shoot. So this was short. And so sweet. Elsa was the cutest flower EVER. And Jaxon dressed up as his dad- doing a darn good job with everything from the hard hat and blue bomber tuque to the Carhartts and Converse sneakers. This photo shoot will have to continue another day, because we were all ready for bed.

I’ve been fortunate to work with exceptional people. One of them is Pattie Fair, a Prevention Officer with WorkSafe BC, and more recently, her dog Zak. I worked closely with Pattie on the Mexican Agriculture project, and several WorkSafeBC assignments throughout the Okanagan Valley. Pattie practices what she preaches, and takes a very personal approach to worker safety and hazard prevention. We should all be as passionate about our work as she is. As for Zak, he should certainly be considered for the role of mascot with WorkSafeBC. Here they are. Pattie, thanks for all your hospitality and support on my last Okanagan visit. Miss you both.

The following article and photograph was published in the latest edition of WorkSafe Magazine, a publication by the Workers Compensation Board of BC. The topic is Cold Stress, so it probably seemed appropriate for the editor to call me in Winnipeg with this assignment. Ironically, at the time I was sitting on a sunny patio sipping white wine, and we had to mock a scene using steam from a kettle to create an image that would fit the article. Patio days are over in Winnipeg, and I’ve switched to red… but I’ll definitely utilize the advice from everyone I interviewed for this article in order to find some “cold comfort” in the dreaded upcoming winter.

Meet my niece, Elsa Tarr. There’s lots and lots of love surrounding this gorgeous little girl. Congratulations to my brother Keith, his wife Andi, and my nephew Jaxon who is a proud big brother. Welcome to the world, Elsa. The next person who pees on my set better hope they’re as perfect as you are.

These wines had my vote from the first sip, and this year Painted Rock Estate Winery is getting nods from around the globe. Thirteen wines from Painted Rock were submitted for the 2011 Canadian Wine Awards which took place only a few weeks ago, and the Penticton winery collected 13 medals. Not too shabby.

Internationally, the winery is also making headlines after being approached by a Chinese wine brokerage to ship 10-20 percent of their production oversees. For the small boutique winery in Penticton, this is big news (and I’m stoked to hear my images will be on the walls of a new restaurant launching in China). But contrary to their tiny tasting room, their wines have been big news from the beginning. If you haven’t visited, go. If you haven’t tasted, do. Cheers to John, Trish and the entire Painted Rock team. Next time, I’ll plan for a longer visit. xx.

I spent multiple days in Okanagan apple orchards last week, and somehow left without digging my teeth into any fresh fruit. Shocking and somewhat shameful, I know… but my attention was behind the camera for this final round of images with WorkSafe BC’s project on worker safety for Mexican immigrants . Thanks so much to WorkSafe BC, the Mexican Consulate, the Ministry of Labour, and the many Mexican immigrants who eagerly posed in my photographs and carried my camera bag. You’ve been so great to work with. Through this program, Mexican immigrants will be educated on worker safety prior to arriving in British Columbia to work in agriculture. The project will be rolled out in a few short weeks and I wish you all the best, and safest, of outcomes.

Our final shot list was vast and varied. The images include an overview of BC agriculture, proper and improper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), weather, chemical storage, vehicle licensing and enforcement- these are just a few of the images. For more on this project, see previous posts hola or just smile and safe and smelly. Hola.

I’ll confess, this was my first time at camp. I’ve done my share of camping, but have never been to camp- certainly not diabetes camp. So at 29 years old, I could relate to the nervous fidgeting as children arrived with backpacks and waved goodbye to their parents.

Summer camp is often hailed as the ultimate experience for children. For these children, the value of summer camp is more than most people can fathom. For one week, they are in the company of other children who understand life with Type 1 diabetes.

Camp Briardale is one of 12 camps across the country organized by the Canadian Diabetes Association. This year, 80 children with Type 1 diabetes (81 including this kid) spent one week in Roseau River, Manitoba. Camp certainly isn’t a break from diabetes- unfortunately this disease doesn’t take days off- but it is an opportunity to share in the camp experience, knowing a full medical team is on site. Familiar faces from the Diabetes Education Resource for Children and Adolescents (DERCA) lead the medical team, and each cabin is assigned one cabin counselor, a medical counselor and a nutrition counselor. These children are well taken care of, but the true significance of their camp experience is not medical. Let the friendships created at Camp Briardale carry these children through the emotional burden of living with diabetes. That support will last a lifetime.

Well, here’s to farmers. That’s all I can say after this most recent photoshoot with WorkSafe BC (Workers Compensation Board of BC). The day left me tired, sweaty and smelling like manure, but I wasn’t working half as hard as those farmers. Expect to see some of these images in the upcoming issue of WorkSafe Magazine. I just had to beat them to the punch!

I’ve been working on this project with WorkSafe BC and the Mexican Consulate for over a year now, and the finished product is expected to launch in the next few months. Here’s more details from a previous post on the same assignment. These images will be used for training material, which will be delivered to Mexican Immigrants prior to arriving in Canada to work in agriculture. Many of these workers have never been to Canada and aren’t familiar with the landscape, culture, agriculture and more importantly, safety procedures and regulations in this country. With over 3000 Mexican Immigrants arriving in BC annually, this project proactively addresses worker training and safety. A huge thanks to Pattie Fair from WorkSafe BC who poured her heart into this project and became a great friend in the meantime. Staff from WorkSafe BC, dignitaries from the Mexican Consulate and the many farm workers who modeled- you’ve all been an absolute pleasure to work with.
